THE RIDING

With a large part of Botswana being dedicated to protected game reserves for ‘The Big 5’ it means that motorcycles are limited as to where they can travel in Botswana.

There are a lot of dirt roads/sand tracks for us to explore, but there’s also a large part of the trip where our only option is to take 2 longer days of tar roads to get us to the next destination.

There will also be days where we ride through vast open pans of the Makgadikgadi Pans where we will be extremely remote and heading through the dense Botswana bush. You’ll want to make sure you are well hydrated and fed ahead of these stretches.

Our guides will work with you early on in the trip in the sand to help boost your confidence and skills of navigating through sand. It can be difficult, but we’ll all be in it together!

ALL RIDERS MUST HAVE PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IN SAND. NO BEGINNERS.

Journey to the Okavango on Makoro boats

THE ADVENTURE

Our motorcycle and safari adventure through Botswana provides adventurers like yourself a truly unique experience both on and off the bike.

Botswana’s main appeal to overseas travelers is it’s wildlife and during ‘Journey to the Okavango’ you’ll have numerous different ways of experiencing wildlife.

Upon arrival you’ll head to Chobe Safari Lodge located on the banks of the Zambezi River. While here you’ll get to relax by the pool, experience a game drive through Chobe National Park and a sunset boat cruise that will blow your mind as you view wildlife from our private boat.

Along the journey you’ll get to experience a wide range of road conditions (sand, some gravel and long tar roads). Every few days we’ll throw in some unforgettable experiences, like camping out on salt pans and gliding through the Okavango Delta on a Makoro boat to our bush camp.

If you’re looking for a great African motorcycle adventure that provides you with a great mix of on and off the bike experiences, join us in 2024 for ‘Journey to the Okavango.’

THE ACCOMMODATION

We’ll make sure you’ve got a bed to sleep in every night!

Only 2 nights of this adventure will be in tents (prepared camps) in the Botswana Bush. Both of these nights are best experienced this way.

Your first camping night will be on a very comfortable bedroll on massive salt pans where an entire camp will be set up for us. The other night camping will be out in the Okavango Delta where tents, stretchers, linen and showers are provided.

All of the other nights on this adventure will be in lodges that have Wi-Fi, hot water and beds for you to rest your body.

Should you wish to not share any rooms we can accommodate your needs.

ADVENTURE ADD ON: Don’t want to share a room? No problem. You can select the SOLO ADVENTURER option when making your booking and we’ll make sure you’ve got your own room/tent each night and when possible your rooms are upgraded to suites.

THE WILDLIFE

One of the biggest appeals of Botswana is the wildlife experience that you’ll find.

A large portion of Botswana is unfenced Game Reserves with all kinds of animals roaming freely.

While on this adventure you’ll have several opportunities to experience wild animals, off the bike.

GAME DRIVES: There will be two separate parks where we’ll wake up early in the morning to head into National Parks on a game drive where you have the opportunity to see all of the Big 5.

BOAT CRUISE: A unique aspect of Botswana is it’s water. Water is essential to the wildlife, and where there’s water you’ll find animals. There will be two opportunities on the trip where you’ll get to enjoy a sunset boat cruise on both the Zambezi & Okavango Rivers. This could quite possibly be the highlight of your trip.

MAKORO OVERNIGHT: During our stay we’ll board fiberglass boats called Makoro’s. These boats are used to navigate around in the shallow waters of the Okavango. In this area again you’ll have the opportunity to see all of the Big 5 near our bush camp.

ITINERARY

Overview: This is a round trip from Kasane, Botswana. We recommend you fly into Kasane airport and fly out from Vic Falls airport in Zimbabwe. More flight recommendations in the itinerary below (Arrival/Departure Day).

  • After arriving at the lodge from the airport the day is yours! There is a big pool at the main lodge with a restaurant that overlooks the Zambezi River. Dinner this evening will be a buffet dinner at Chobe Safari Lodge.

FLIGHT INFO: ALL GUESTS MUST ARRIVE BY 1PM

    OPTION 1: Kasane Airport

Kasane airport is 10 minutes from our lodge. If you choose this option it’s best to fly into Johannesburg, then book a direct flight from Johannesburg to Kasane (SHUTTLE INCLUDED).

    OPTION 2: Victoria Falls Airport

Victoria Falls International airport is located in Zimbabwe. To get to our lodge in Botswana you’ll need to organize a shuttle (1.5 hour drive) for $60 each way.

  • Your first full day in Botswana starts with an early morning game drive into Chobe National Park. Anything is possible to see in terms of game, but this park offers all of the Big 5.

We’ll catch a late buffet breakfast at the lodge and then head back to camp to check the bikes in, do some gear prep.

Later that day we’ll board a private boat that will take us on a sunset boat cruise on the Zambezi River. This is one of the most special wildlife experiences you’ll find in Africa.

After the boat cruise we’ll head back to camp, pack the bikes and enjoy a braii around the campfire.

  • It’s an early start today! Your first day of riding we’ll be up nice and early to beat the heat of the day so that we can take on Hunter’s Road.

Coffee will be served at camp, but breakfast will be had out on Hunter’s Road.

As we’re leaving early this day we won’t be in a rush. We’ll take breaks often as we need to.

The dirt riding is just under 100kms, followed by 200kms of tar to Elephant Sands.

Here you will get to hang out at the lodge, swim in the pool and relax while elephants are just 10 meters away enjoying their watering hole.

  • We’ll enjoy breakfast at 7am at the lodge as we watch the elephants drink around the watering hole.

After breakfast we’ll make our way south for an afternoon visit and walk around Kubu Island.

From Kubu Island we’ll make our way north through dense bush and wide open pans.

We’ll arrive at a location in the middle of the Nwetwe Pans where a camp will be set up for us upon arrival. Dinner & breakfast will be served here on the pans, a bonfire will keep us going late into the night and you’ll enjoy sunrise the next morning from your bedroll on the endless pan.

  • We’ll start packing up early from the pans, enjoy breakfast at camp and start making our way north towards Gweta.

We’ll stop in at Gweta Lodge for showers, lunch and a swim in the pool before making our way to Maun (tar roads).

Dinner this evening will be served at the restaurant and you’ll have a comfortable chalet to rest your head in this evening.

OPTIONAL: Here you have the opportunity to take a scenic helicopter flight from Nwetwe Pans to Kubu Island. This is an added cost which can be added to your booking.

  • It’s an early start today as we head to the Okavango Delta.

Breakfast is served from 0630, and the game viewer will collect us from camp at 0730 where we’ll take a 2hr drive deep into the Okavango Delta to the Makoro Station.

You’ll be dropped off at the Makoro boats where you’ll be paired up with another rider and a poler who will guide you through the river canals on the fiberglass makoro boat.

Along the way you’ll have the opportunity to experience the Okavango from the water where you’ll likely see hippos, elephants and other local wildlife. Anything is possible.

The boat will drop us off at our overnight bush camp and lunch will be served within a few hours. You’ll have the afternoon to relax, take a nap or have a walk around camp.

Just before sunset you can either head out for a bush walk or take the makoros to a local swimming spot (it’s amazing).

Dinner will be served around campfire by our team and you’ll enjoy a good nights rest in your tent with comfortable linen and the sound of wild animals off in the distance.

  • Today will be a long day.

Breakfast will be early this morning at camp. After breakfast we’ll load up our gear into the boats and head back to the Makoro station where the game viewer will take us back to our camp.

After arriving back to camp, we’ll gear up to get back on the bikes, grab some lunch for takeaways and make our way north to the Namibian border.

IT’S AN ALL TAR ROAD DAY

Our accommodation this evening will be on the banks of the Okavango River.

OPTIONAL: Here you have the opportunity to sign up for a sunrise helicopter ride through the Okavango Delta. This is an added cost which can be added to your booking.

  • No riding today! It’s time for some R&R!

You’ll wake up on this day at your leisure from either your own chalet (additional cost) or shared.

A buffet breakfast will be waiting for you to enjoy overlooking the Okavango River.

The activities we have lined up for the day will be a game drive into the Buffalo Park and also another sunset boat cruise, this time from the Okavango River through Namibia.

Dinner will be enjoyed on the deck as you watch the sun go down!

  • After a hearty breakfast from the lodge we’ll hit the road. Will do a fill up just outside of town and start a full day of tar riding along the Kaprivi Strip back towards Botswana.

It’s a pretty straight road so make sure you’ve got a podcast or some good tunes ready!

We’ll cross through the border and have one more night back in Kasane!

  • We’ll wake up early, have breakfast, load up into the shuttles and make our way to Victoria Falls where we’ll have a guided tour of the falls before catching flights back home.

OPTIONAL: Victoria Falls Gorge Scenic Helicopter flight. Should you wish to enjoy an epic flight through the Victoria Falls gorge this is an incredible experience to see the falls and fly through the gorge.

    DEPARTURE FLIGHT INFO
