In Search of Swazi Gold
October 3-6th 2019
The search is on…
The infamous search for Swazi Gold…
This adventure has been an ongoing evolution of places to stay, food to eat and roads to explore. Our first year was a quickly planned trip to an area that we didn’t know much about. Since then we can’t get enough of this beautiful country and spend the off season researching new areas that offer so much more than what we could have imagined.
The 2019 trip will offer both tar and dirt roads. Getting out of Johannesburg takes a few hours of long tar roads before we reach the twisties of Mpumulanga and up to the beautiful pass leading up to the border of Swaziland. After day 1 of riding you can expect a nice mix of tar and dirt roads. Swaziland has many dirt highways connecting to towns all over. These roads are usually well maintained and also connect to secondary roads that will lead us to some unique locations.
Rider Skill Level Recommendation: Must have prior off-road training or experience.
Road Surface: 80% TAR, 20% DIRT…LONG TAR ROADS NEEDED TO GET US WHERE WE NEED TO GO
Night one will find you just inside the border of Swaziland in an old mining town staying in a houses once owned by the Miners. These properties sleep up to 8 people per house, have a full open garage, yard, kitchen and access to the local pool. This evenings meal will be catered by our team where you’ll get a taste of the local South African cuisine.
On night two you’ll find yourself sleeping in a fully renovated horse stable…yes, you heard that correctly. Which is essentially set up for backpackers but we’ll have the whole place to ourself. Dinner will be buffet style at the restaurant which also has a full bar service. We’ll close out the evening around the bonfire and out under the stars of Swaziland.
The last night in Swaziland is a very special place. A wildlife reserve that offers all kinds of activities such as mountain biking, hikes, game drives or you can also spend the day lounging around their giant pool. In years past, we are graced in the evening with the local warthogs who curl up around the fire pit to stay warm.
